Watch out for Internet "Phishing" Scams!
"Phishing" is an email scam that attempts to trick consumers into revealing personal financial information. It typically involves bogus email messages that use legitimate materials, such as a credit union or other organization's Web site graphics and logos in an attempt to gain your information. The request may be made for account information, credit card numbers, social security numbers, and PIN information.
How to recognize potential "Phishing" scams:
While many of "phishing" emails can look like legitimate web sites, there are a few features that are often indicators the email could be a scam. If it:
- Asks you to provide personal financial information such as your bank account number, credit card number, PIN, or Social Security Number
- Fails to address you by name
- Warns your account will be closed or suspended unless you reconfirm your financial information
- Warns you have been the victim of fraud
- Informs you have won a special prize or earned a reward, but you must first confirm your account information
- Has spelling or grammatical errors
How to avoid becoming a victim:
- Never respond to an unsolicited email that asks for personal financial information
- Do not reply to the email and do not respond by clicking on a link within the email message
- Contact the actual business that supposedly sent the email to verify if it is genuine. Call a phone number that you know to be legitimate, such as those provided on your statement
- Check your monthly statements to
verify transactions. Notify your credit union or credit card
issuer immediately if you find any suspicious transactions
on your statement
